Do animals have a sense of humor? Can animals smile or laugh? What do they find funny?

Thanks. It would've been great if you had included at least some references to the studies you mention so I could research a little more.

Of course animals have a sense of humor, and many can laugh. Scientists suspect that the panting behavior exhibited by dogs during "play chasing" is an analog for human laughter. Rats chirp while they play, again in a way that resembles our giggles. Studies have shown that when rats are playfully tickled, they chirp and bond socially with their human tickler. And they seem to like it, seeking to be tickled more.

It has been proven that rats laugh when tickled! However most of their sounds are ultra sonic and cannot be heard without special equipment.

They do smile, you can tell they are happy in their eyes. But Elephants, Zebra and the Big cats often look like they are smiling.

i,ve seen my dog "smile" after blindsiding me with a big lick. she new i didn,t like it; and seemed "delighted" to do it. she would open her mouth and pant immediately after the fact. seemed like a smile to me.so i say that animals is smile.

I mean real laughing as a consequence of seeing or hearing or understanding something that is funny.

There is a happy content smile and then there is a subordinate and submissive smile.
In the wild this second form of smile is used by monkeys and apes so as they can "smile" at those more dominant and avoid fights.
